LED Aircraft Position Lights

November 28, 2018

Everyone knows the value of LED lights, right??

Much lower power consumption, much less heat, longer life, etc…

A few weeks ago I noticed that my right wingtip position light on the RV-4 was not working.

A new “aviation light” was about $35. How’s that for ridiculous!!

A new SET – all three position lights – of AeroLED position lights was $57.

Leave it to aviation. Where else would you find much better LED lights to be more affordable that “FAA Approved” incandescent lights?? I sure wish the government ran health care system – imagine how much better it would be given their track record! 🙂

Guess which one I purchased??

Yup – the LED’s.

I installed those LED lights recently and it’s as easy as you can imagine. The thing that caught my attention was the heat produced by the old, incandescent lights. I know… no surprise but still… I was surprised!

The not-working bulb was replaced and I turned on the position lights to admire my work. Since I’m lazy, I decided to replace the other lights without walking all the way back to cockpit to turn off the lights.

When I attempted to remove the next light bulb, I was shocked at how hot it was – including the light fixture!! The third light was the same – very, very hot!! I guess I’ve been dealing with only LED’s for so long now that I’ve forgotten how much heat incandescent bulbs produce.

It’s been like this for thirty years – in my airplane – far longer for incandescent light bulbs – so I know the components can take the heat. Nonetheless; I sure feel better with the LED lights and not having a burning cinder glowing at three ends of my airplane!! 🙂

A tail position light that is bright and can be seen! The FAA will ban that in no time at all. They should be 1920’s dim glow with a PMA stamp on it.

You are doing great improvements on that bird. Good for you sir.
