The Hunted… and almost the eaten!

October 20, 2016

I had the pleasure of watching a small group of deer over the course of the last week.

This little group spent a lot of time where I was camped in the Gunnison National Forest.  It is harder to tell from the photos than in real life but it was a Mamma and two babies.  Of course, there was a buck nearby as well as a few other adults.  They were typically in the area early in the morning but occasionally in the evening. The hunting season was fast approaching and they were probably quite happy not being hunted, yet.

My first thought that this was just their natural foraging area.

However; the more I watched them, the more it became obvious that something was up!

If you look closely at the photos, you will see that one of them is always watching me!

Clearly, this was some sort of advanced scout party.

Then this happened!

A blood red sunrise followed by the leader (buck) in close watching me! Even staring at me as if to challenge me!!  I quickly realized that the buck and other adults had been hanging back and were sending the cute and innocent babies in closer to observe and evaluate my strength and defensive capabilities.  They had decided that I was weak and NOW was the time to attack!

I may not be the brightest bulb but I’m not too dim either…

I WAS THE HUNTED AND SCHEDULED TO BE DINNER!!!

Immediately upon figuring this out, Buddy and I formed our retreat plan and hit the road!

I hope the next unsuspecting camper survives as I did not have time to leave a note or sign to warn them.
