This past weekend was the annual New Mexico Pilots Association (NMPA) backcountry airstrip work weekend. The group performs maintenance on the backcountry airstrips each year and this was the weekend to do that work. I put together the following video of that activity.

It is rainy season over New Mexico and this time of year is a real treat. The area is very green and I thoroughly enjoying this new look!
The work is always harder than my norm – sitting in front of a computer – but certainly rewarding.
Our group camped at the Negrito airstrip and shuttled to Rainy Mesa for work. Rainy Mesa has been out of operation for a number of years so it required a fair bit of work. Earlier this year, a number of larger obstructions were removed. This weekend, we focused on rocks. Some very ones were removed as well as hundreds – maybe thousands – of smaller ones. The crew worked hard and accomplished much! I think we were all pretty tuckered out and sore for the next few days.
A very big thank you to NMPA, the US Forest Service, and all the volunteers that made the re-opening of this airstrip a reality!
