I don’t ride my bicycle in dark very often but when I do, I like to see where I am going. So, I always ride with a front and read LED bike light.
I purchased a Blackburn Voyager 2.0 and Mars Click combo light set about six months ago from ChainReactionCycles.com. My experience with them has been very good. The both have two modes – steady on and flashing. Both are LED bike lights.
There have been a number of times that I’ve been riding on a road and the traffic “felt” heavy enough to warrant having both lights flashing. I’ve also used them on numerous short evening/dark errands and night hops. I haven’t replaced a battery yet!!
The majority of the time, the lights are just dead weight. However; just like the tools, spare tube, and air pump that I carry as dead weight – when needed, they will be very valuable!
The front light seems to do a pretty good job illuminating the road/trail ahead and also casting some light to the sides. This ability to see both ahead and immediately down around the front wheel works nicely for me. The light ahead is not super bright nor does go a super long ways but it is sufficient for my needs. I can imagine someone riding at a fast pace would want to see further down the road.
I’ve read of some people riding with two lights front and rear for the time when one of them breaks. That seems like a pretty good idea – particularly if the spare light is one of the super small units.
