The deconstruction continues (first post)…
If you look closely you can see the tile floor in the kitchen (and mud room) has been removed, one wall is entirely gone, and the other is changing.
The concrete slab floor is terribly “unlevel” – it has many high and low spots. That would never work with new flooring. There are folks that can fix that with a combination of grinding and adding a layer of self-leveling concrete. I’m going to have that done but first, everything must be out of the way.
The remainder of the wall in the above photo is coming out and a header being installed – just like the open half. The result will be two columns separating the rooms. Not what I was hoping for but it’ll work. The structural engineer that said he would come give an opinion on whether or not the wall was weight bearing never showed up so I took the safe approach and assume it is. That said, I don’t think it’s weight bearing… At some point I need to find a way to dress up those columns – other than sheet rock. Maybe a faux log or something.
The kitchen is next on the list – its all coming out. Like I said… deconstruction!
The amount of deconstruction trash has accumulated to the point of overload so a container is coming for it all.

Wow! You are working hard!! Is sub-contracting your next career?!
Lookin’ good!

No! Not a chance! 🙂
Sometimes I feel like a general contractor when attempting to get various companies to do things (septic installation, bid on floor leveling, plumbing work, etc.). That is MUCH too close to management for me and is incredibly frustrating!! So, I won’t have a second career as a general contractor either. 🙂

Hey there Jonny-Boy! Have you considered a steel ‘I-Beam’ to span the distance? This may be an option instead of having two posts in your open area. Have done this a few times remodeling homes to open them up. You will just have to ‘crib-up’ your two end walls that support either end of the beam. Should check with you engineer first before doing this.
Have fun and am enjoying your shenanigans from afar!

I LOVE the idea of a steel beam spanning that whole space Rick!! I’m doing some research on that possibility. At this time, the headers are in and the structural part of that wall is done. However; if I can find an affordable beam, I may just change direction.

Nice project, over my ability.
