Hot Tub Cover

February 7, 2014

So, you’ve got this thing that burns gobs of electricity and turns it into heat.  You have a cover for this thing but it is torn up and leaks the heat pretty bad.  What do you do??

Yup, order a new cover.  Or, I suppose, turn the thing off altogether.  We’ll skip the latter option.

As mentioned previously (here), I have a Hot Springs Sovereign hot tub/spa.  My cover is pretty old, I think maybe six years or so.  From the years in the sun, the stitching down the center folder had failed and large gaps had opened up.  Yes, being the cheapskate that I am, I just tossed a folded blanket over the gaps.  That looks pretty cheesy though, so, I finally broke down and ordered a new hot tub cover.

After much research, I decided to go with Spa Cover Buy Direct. This means that they were about the cheapest option that still appeared to sell a reasonable product.

After ordering, it took about three weeks for the huge box containing the new cover to arrive via UPS Freight.  It wasn’t heavy, just big.

I have a hot tub cover lift – the mechanism that allows the cover to just fold over the side. I can’t remember the name of it but it requires a couple of hard points to be installed in the cover when it is constructed.  Do not forget to include this if you have a lift!!

Removing the old cover took about two minutes. A few screws out off she comes.  You then need to remove the cover attach points and move them onto the new cover. I dropped the new cover on the hot tub and then lined up the cover attachments, drilled the holes, and installed the screws.

That’s it!  Simple as can be.

Now, a REAL tip.  How does one dispose of that old hot tub cover??  It won’t fit in the garbage can and isn’t recyclable.  I found the cat’s meow!  Advertise it on Craiglist as a freebie.  One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.  Within a day of posting the ad, someone picked it up and seemed quite happy to have it.  Win-Win!

The new cover looks soooo much better than the old. I certainly hope it is preventing all that expensive electricity from escaping during these cold winter days!
