The ability to export text messages from an Android phone is not built in. I save a fair number of SMS text messages and recently decided that I probably ought to backup this data. None of these messages are critical but are snippets of info that I’d rather not lose.
I started looking for a way to export text messages and found that there are several apps that provide this capability. The free “Export to File” app from the Google Play Store looked promising so I put it to work.
The app allows you to export a variety of things. I selected SMS (text) messages, Contacts, and system settings. It allows you to save the data to comma separated value (CSV) files on the SD card and also email these files via your Gmail account. I did all of the above. It worked as advertised and is intuitive to use. For my purposes, the CSV file format works just fine. It is not the perfect solution if one wants to later import this data. My goal was simply to backup the information.
Free software that does what I ask of it. No complaints from me!
