Cycling the gravel roads

March 19, 2013

After a bit of a false start, it seems spring has arrived here and so has the cycling.  The false start was my own fault – I hoped that the warmer temperatures were here a bit too early.  Never hurts to hope, I suppose…  In any case, they are here now.  This past week I rode 65 miles in four rides. It felt great!

I am hoping to participate in the New Mexico Endurance Series (NMES) San Ysidro Dirty Century ride this coming weekend.  For me, the short course of 58 miles would be a real victory.  Of course, a variety of things have to come together to make this happen but I am trying to get there!!  My typical riding routes are mostly paved roads.  In an effort to get my body prepared for sixty miles of dirt and gravel road (double track), I changed things up and road gravel roads all week.  So, all those miles are on dirt and gravel.  I am more worried about my behind/hands/wrists wearing out on a sixty mile ride than I am my legs.  The need to ride dirt forced me to find some new routes/roads and this certainly worked to my advantage. I have added a couple of really pretty routes to my list of options. Ok, they WILL be really pretty when things green up! 🙂

Weight, you ask??

Well, tough question.  If I were a pessimist, I could be very negative.  An optimist could find reasons to be excited. I am a bit in between.  I made it thru the winter months without any weight gain – that is a huge positive. Basically stayed at 240 pounds.  The negative is that I watched what I ate very carefully during these months to LOSE and it didn’t happen. Now that I’ve been riding again, I am really hoping the loss starts again.  I am currently sitting at 237 and, still, closely watching my consumption.  I don’t eat much these days – it’s kinda weird. Maybe that is the problem.  I spent a couple weeks considering the NutriSystem approach but finally decided that my problem is really about exercise, or the lack of it, and not so much what I am eating.  I dunno, I’m no expert.
