Glowing Red Bluffs

March 5, 2013

Vans RV-3B Daisy Aircraft Lycoming O-320The mountains and bluffs of western New Mexico can be spectacular.  Many folks fly over this terrain at 12,000′ and during the middle of the day and completely miss the grandeur.  The colors jump in the right light – particularly red.

At sunrise and sunset, the light strikes the bluffs and lights them up like fire – the red colors are spectacular – really! Some will watch the following video and believe that it has been edited or the camera is adjusted incorrectly. That’s not the case, this is simply what the area looks like on the right day and time.

A friend of mine recorded the video on a recent trip to Grants, NM for breakfast.  This is a pretty common trip for us and we love it.  Getting to see these red colors only happens for a few minutes as the sun rises and causes the colors in the rocks to shine brilliantly.  Normally it is just very pretty and fascinating terrain – at times like this captured in the following video, it is simply unbelievable!

    Great videos.
Im planning a flying RV trip for Apr 7-14. 6-8 RV’s w/ pilots. Some new to backcountry. I used your videos as teasers. We will press on to AZ as well.

Would love to hear from you on more fun places in NM to fly over or land at. Probably camping.

    Join us if you can.
