Meandering

This past Saturday, around mid-morning, I took a nice 22.3 mile ride (or, what I thought was 22.3 miles). It was sort of a meandering ride north up thru Los Lunas and then back south towards home with a big loop at the south end to bump up the mileage.  It was 70 degrees when I started and about 72 degrees when I finished.  It was a really nice ride – not a lot of traffic and a number of other cyclists were going about their rides.  Not sure why that is motivating to me but it always make me feel good to see others out there.  There weren’t as many yard/garage sales as I was expecting which was good. I’m far from a yard sale junkie but I do like to stop and make sure there isn’t something that I can’t live without (there usually isn’t).  Oh, there was a short stretch of really bad (washboard) dirt road.  That sucked.  I am riding a full rigid and about the only option is to slow WAY down and just take the beating.

Why did I “think” it was 22.3 miles??  Well, I have been using my bike computer which uses a little magnet on the wheel and sensor on the fork (hall effect sensor).  Apparently, the calibration was off a bit as the “Move! Bike Computer” Android App that I have been running on my (Samsung Galaxy S 4G) phone reported the distance as 20.35. This is GPS distance and I gotta trust it over a hall effect sensor that has never been calibrated!

The following is the Google Earth track.  Mixed into that route were three stops – two garage sales (I know, silly…) and one Gatorade gas station stop. No dogs chased me today and this is always nice!

After the ride, I did some tuning of my bike computer. The magnet in the spokes was moved closer to the hub to record less distance.  That’s my working theory – we’ll see if it works in a few days.
