To be cold or not to be cold

August 5, 2011

I arrived back home after a week long trip to find my kitchen freezer working just fine but the refrigerator not very cool.  This is the side-by-side type of appliance.  A little research revealed that most kitchen refrigerator-freezer units send cold air from the freezer side to the refrigerator side.  So, that was good news.  I found lots of links talking about defrosting, possible fan failure, and so forth.  I decided a good defrosting of my frost-free unit was in order – at least it was a good starting point.

Refrigerator Freezer Evaporator CoilsThe How To of defrosting is pretty simple – turn it off.  🙂  I removed all the food, washed down the insides, and then took the cover off the back of the freezer.  Interesting…  The evaporator (refrigeration coils/radiator) there was completely buried in ice.  Some gentle coaxing with the heat gun had all the ice removed in short order.  I put the whole thing back together and turned it back on. The electric fan started spinning, the refrigeration system started making noise, and SHAZAMM!! (after a few minutes) both the freezer and refrigerator started getting cold again.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all fixes were so simple!!  You ever wonder where all the food and yuck that ends up on the sides and floor of the freezer come from?!?!  🙂
