I try not to watch television news but occasionally it happens. There are a variety of things that I see on the news that just boggle my mind. I can’t help but wonder if everyone watching can see these things or if I am the only one?!?
Non-answers to questions
What is it with politicians? They rarely answer the question. They all seem to have this slick song and dance and really seem to like to hear their own voice but they say nothing! Apparently it is just me because the reporters keep asking questions and the people keep watching and listening. Even worse, some reporters then go on to extoll what great things the politician had to say. Which leads me to….
Opinion
I always thought the “news” was supposed to report on what happened. When did this stop? Now it is all about opinion which is 180 degrees away from where I thought they were supposed to be. Apparently I missed the memo.
Speculation
I love it when a reporter says something like: “we are not going to speculate but we think that such and so…” WHAT!?!? Apparently they do not know what SPECULATE means – get a dictionary. I guess the general public must live for all this speculation as it is another of the “in things” that 24-hour news likes to do. There are few things less interesting to me that listening to someone with an English or cosmetology degree (maybe) talking about the dangers of a nuclear reactor or the how some new legislation is going to impact the world economy.
Promises
I love listening to all the great things that a politician is going to accomplish. Amazing to me is that people seem to BELIEVE it?!? Most of the nonsense that the ramble on about is not even under their control. This is heard constantly these days with all the talk of budgets and legislation. Wonderful stuff! Apparently, the public does not understand what the three branches of government can and cannot do – even some of the politicians.
Blind Support
I saw a program the other day that was getting the response from individuals following a “big speech.” It was surreal to watch. The “speech” was just more of the same crap. Basically, “we are going to fix the problem, don’t worry, we have a new plan.” Many of the people had to be smoking dope. I simply do not understand how someone can be so excited about a politician telling them that they are “going to fix it” without giving any details whatsoever. But guess what? They were – they were totally goo-goo eyed, talking like the answers to all the problems in the universe had just been unveiled. Again, amazing – the phrase “lambs to slaughter” comes to mind. I understand this type of behavior when it comes to your favorite football team or race car driver. It’s even good to have this type of support for your team but not so much when it comes to the people running our country.
