Sacks

October 18, 2011

Yesterday was provisioning day… ok… just a trip to the grocery store.  I spent the typical ridiculous amount of money on less than a cart full of items. However; it seems that Walmart has figured out a way to reward us shoppers.  They give us a zillion of these great plastic sacks (or bags, if you prefer)!!!

The checkout person was plenty nice and reasonably fast (thank you) but never put more than three items in a sack. Some of the sacks even included some additional, unused/unopened sacks – an additional bonus, I guess. These sacks must be crazy cheap or else corporate Walmart would send out some sort of ‘sacks must be full’ command to it’s cashiers.  Yes, this photo is of all the sacks from this one single trip!!

I take my sacks to the local Lowes home improvement center recycle bin – I wonder what the majority of people do with them?? A quick search shows that there are quite a few uses – more than I would have guessed and certainly some that I will never take advantage of (yuck)!

I’m not a huge environmentalist type but there are some things that just strike me as dumb and obviously not good for the environment or anything else.  This is one of them.  Perhaps it is a tiny deal compared to the power used in processing and/or packaging the food that was IN the sack – I dunno.  A zillion of these plastic sacks going into the landfill just doesn’t seem like one of our better plans.
