I am a pilot, aircraft builder, and have always been very interested in performance and efficiency. Because of that, the Reno air races have always been fascinating to me. At Reno, all types of aircraft participate in the racing. Vintage aircraft from the World War II era all the way to brand new aircraft licensed by the FAA in the experimental homebuilt category.
The air races have their fair share of accidents and all involved understand the risks. This year at Reno, there was a horrible accident (9/16/2011) with quite a few spectators killed in addition to the pilot. There is no sense in speculating what happened, it was most certainly a mechanical problem.
I feel horrible for the friends and families that have lost a loved one. You are in my thoughts and prayers. May God grant you peace during this time.
