I’ve been using Shimano M424 pedals for awhile now – about a year. Overall, my review holds true. Recently, however; these pedals started “squeaking.” The noise seemed to be coming from the plastic/phenolic/composite “platform” that circles the actual pedal. It rotates on the pedal shaft but there are no bearings. I tried cleaning, lubing, and tweaking – nothing seemed to eliminate it. I’m afraid it was more than I could stand – I like a silent bike!
I purchased the M424 pedals thinking that I needed a pedal with which I could use regular shoes as well as cycling shoes. This has not been the case. I rarely ride my bike without my cycling shoes. When I do, it is around the block at most. So, I decided that it was time to get a better set of pedals and forget the desire to be able to use regular shoes.
I picked the Shimano M540 MTB pedal as my new equipment.
Coming out of the box, they seem to be a quality pedal. All metal, no plastic cages to squeak!! New cleats are also included.
Riding them has been all positive. Just because of the different shape of the pedal, the first couple of clip-in’s felt different. Every one since then has been very natural feeling.
This week I have put in a lot of mountain bike miles and these new M540 pedals have not given me a lick of trouble or noise!!
