The question regarding what to do with “important papers” is occasionally discussed in full-timer RV groups. These includes birth certificates, passports, marriage license, titles, and so forth.
The obvious answer is a safety deposit box. However; having run three-quarters of the way across the United States to grab your birth certificate may not be very convenient.
Many people scan the documents into PDF format and save them to one or more secure web storage locations (cloud storage).
Then there folks like me that keep them in a fire resistant box in my house – the motorhome. In my opinion this works just fine as they are accessible, reasonably safe, and all can be replaced if necessary – at least in my case. Birth certificates can be ordered from my birth state, vehicle titles can be ordered from the registered state, and even passports can be replaced.
I suppose a safety deposit box might be a good idea for those of you with a few million dollars’ worth of stock and/or bond certificates though!
