CPAP Trouble

January 9, 2012

Bang Head Here Stupid Act FrustrationI spent the weekend packing and preparing to move onto the boat. I have sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine and nose mask while sleeping.  This is a “Constant Positive Airway Pressure” machine that helps to prevent snoring which prevents the constant interruption of sleep.  The device that I have (ResMed Escape S8) has both 110 VAC and 12 VDC inputs. I have always used the 110 VAC so needed to round up a 12 volt chord. I tried a couple and none of them worked so I plugged the device back into the AC chord and was going to go do some research.  But wait!  The machine always starts automatically when plugged in – it didn’t this time.  Ugh…

Yeah, I tried everything and now my little thousand dollar machine is dead BIG BUMMER!

Some research tells me that this is not uncommon as the manufacturer (ResMed) apparently uses a reverse polarity connector and everyone that uses a non-manufacturer supplied DC chord blows the onboard fuse. Of course, this fuse is not easy to change so it has to go in for service.

Sigh…
