39DollarGlasses Take 2

September 24, 2012

I reviewed 39DollarGlasses.com about a year ago here.  That time, it was a prescription sunglasses purchase. My eye doctor said I needed new glasses (something about getting old…) so I started looking. The cost in the local stores nearly makes me faint.  The price for the frame alone is always shocking, throw the lens in and it is more than I can take.  So, I decided to take a bit of a risk and order online again.  The thing that I feared was selecting glasses that made me look stupid.

Hmm… ok, at this point there probably no fighting that problem. I guess I was worried about purchasing glasses that made me look less sexy…

Hmm… that’s probably not an issue either.  Ok, ok… I just didn’t want to waste any money.  🙂

I was pleased to find that 39DollarGlasses.com has some new functionality on their site that allows you to upload a photo of yourself and then actually see what each of the frames would look like on your face.  It actually worked really well and, in hindsight, seems to have been pretty accurate. Basically, you upload a photo of your face and then mark your pupil location using their software. Based on your prescription (distance between pupils), they are able to scale the frame appropriately – I think, just guessing on this.  In any case, it seems to work.

So, I ordered and received my new glasses a few days later.  I am a happy customer.  I didn’t spend a fortune – in fact, I spent about a third of what the local shop wanted. I have glasses that fit, I like, and have some of the features that I always want but could not afford when purchased locally.
