I mentioned here that I was researching the various Aerobar options for my mountain bike.
Well, I have pulled the trigger, installed them on my Specialized MTB, and have made many rides with them. I am far from a “fast”, pro, or even accomplished cyclist so please read my comments with that in mind.
I purchased the Profile T3+ AL Aerobar from PricePoint.com. Deciding on which bar to purchase is a real challenge. Like most everything in the cycling world, there are dozens of options. I had read a couple reviews that mentioned bars that are individual (not connected at the forward end) are much easier to tune to fit you. That sounded like good advice though the continuous tubing aero bars appear to be stronger. Note that this is only a guess and not actual experience.
The addition of the Aerobar certainly changes the feel of the bars and steering. I would not call it a negative affect, more like a heavier, somewhat stabilizing feel. For the road riding that I am currently doing, it feels good. I suspect it would not feel so good on a technical single track. They are easy to remove if that is the type of riding one is going to do.
The position is very different. I’m still a fatty.. err clyde, so it kinda feels like my knees are driving into my paunch! 🙂 It’s not quite that bad but I do have to apply a bit of focus to retain a reasonable form. My knees want to swing out.
Decreased wind resistance is VERY noticeable. It is windy season where I live and it is really nice to reduce the air loads. I really cannot emphasize this point enough – there really is a huge difference. Normally grinding into the wind is extremely taxing to me – four or five miles is a real pain. Riding into the wind from the Aerobar position is still work but it certainly seems easier than sitting up.
My speed increases when on the Aerobar. I’m sure this has to do with the decreased wind resistance but I wonder if using some different muscles (glutes) has something to do with it as well. Not sure but I like the result.
My wrists and hands seem to be very happy during longer rides. The chance to move the pressure to my elbows is super nice.
Finally, the cool factor is high. I probably look like an elephant trying to look aerodynamic but I’m not riding for the pleasure of others. I ride for myself and I feel like I am competing in a time trial which is kewl!!
I like the Aerobar!
