The hangar at the bachelor pad had a good number of lights.
None of them worked.
Ok, almost none of them.
There are four, eight foot long fluorescent fixtures and five, four foot long fluorescent fixtures. None of the eight footers worked, two of the four footers worked. That’s pretty close to ‘none’, right??
Something needed done.
My first thought was purchasing a bunch of new fluorescent light tubes but that was a VERY fleeting thought. I’ve never been much of a fan. Not sure why but I’ve not experienced very good service from them in the hangar. They seem to die fairly quickly or it’s cold and they don’t seem to work very well (not very bright). Regardless, I decided to switch to LED lights.
Specifically, LED ‘tubes’ that replace the fluorescent tubes. That would allow me to use the existing fixtures.
I found the following on Amazon and ordered a box of ten of each:
For the four foot fixtures: LED Light Tube 4FT 6000K Clear Cover
For the eight foot fixtures: LED Light Tube 40W 8FT 4000K 6000K CLEAR Cover
The negative to this approach is that the wiring in the light fixture needs to be changed. Basically, the starter and/or ballast is removed and the LED tube is given 120V AC power.
My light fixtures are up on a 12′ ceiling.
Have I mentioned that I love heights!?!? 🙂
I think I learned an important lesson standing on top of an eight foot ladder…
When wearing reading glasses (while working on small wires), your ability to balance by looking around is severely compromised!!
At least mine was!!
Regardless, nobody was injured during this little project.
Flipping the hangar light switch is now an impressive event!! The brilliance of the LED light is amazing and that is exactly the kind of like when working out there!!

The Led bulbs I used in my shop were made by Fleet Electric and required no changes to the ballast. I do not know how, but they have worked a long time so far. I also see you need to paint the ceiling high gloss white. Mine looked like yours and after painting, I needed to wear welding goggles in my shop. It made a huge difference in reflected light.
Thanks for the project update.
