I haven’t written much about cycling this summer. Sadly, it is not been a good year.
After the big spill and broken arm, I had my mind firmly set on a rapid return to form. This was not to be. I expected that the arm would heal and everything would be as it was. It isn’t. I have very limited range of motion and nearly no tricep strength. This makes riding a bicycle very difficult.
I visited with my arm surgeon a week ago. This was fourteen months after my big spill.
The plan at this point is to slice the arm open again near the end of February, 2016. Much of the hardware will be removed (thirteen screws and two plates), leaving two screws in place. He will also clean up the soft tissue that has built up in the joint. Hopefully this will resolve my limited range of motion and, hopefully, allow the triceps to regain strength. Which, hopefully, will allow me to be able to spend a great deal more time and miles on my bicycle.
Obviously, I am NOT looking forward to going under the knife again. However; I am so frustrated with my current limitations that I am willing to do it in hopes of things getting better. This is all incredibly frustrated. I bet those of you who are cyclists can understand. One becomes immersed in a sport like cycling. You learn to love the way it makes your body feel, what it does for your physical condition, and most especially what it does for your mind! Then, take it all away.
I continue to be hopeful that I will see some progress after another surgery in February.
