In Missy, I constructed a built in bed frame. When I moved into the house, I moved the queen sized mattress but I needed a frame. So… I went to work building one.
For reasons that are beyond my limited mental capacity, I’m kinda into the rustic look these days. I started looking around the world wide web for ideas and came up with some good ones. Some of them used some hyper fancy Japanese joinery that would be really neat to master. However; I can’t cut straight so figured such a challenge is probably beyond my current capability. Eventually I found a fairly simple design.
It is largely based on milled down 2×6 construction lumber. That’s were things started – lots of cutting, planing, and sanding.
The legs are fairly big beefy/chunky bits. Gluing them together here.
No fancy joinery this time around – lots of pocket screws instead. Those that can’t join, screw. 🤣
Here you can see it coming together. At this point, LOTS of sanding was happening. Of course, after all that sanding I was sure that I hand’t missed a spot… and later found many spots that had been missed. 🙄
Jumping ahead to the end here. Because I forgot to take photos and all the steps in between were fairly boring… I did use the same black tea & vinegar/steel wool finishing technique to oxidize and finish the wood that I used on the coffee table. This time I made some adjustments to the mixture and got a much less chocolatey finish. All that followed by a coat of wax.
I’m very happy with it and think it looks nice. Plenty of imperfections but again, learning a lot with each one of these projects.
