I was doing some thinking about the benefits of having a Ham Radio license after writing my previous post. One of the things that came to mind was APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System). I had not thought of this since I was thinking of adding to my airplane so others could see my position/movement. In summary, it is a way to transmit your GPS position via the 144.390 MHz APRS frequency. This is received and logged to a big database. You can then use a variety of tools or an online app like Google Maps to overlay your reports onto a map. It’s pretty cool stuff.
A Google search for APRS returns a bunch of good links – a few of my favorites follow.
