The Internet is a pretty cool deal. The quantity of information available on line is astounding. As a developer and database “guy” – the recording/indexing of all that information and the ability to quickly search for it is even more astounding. Don’t get me wrong, I am not awe-struck over “computers” as get to see the some of the social problems that have caused every day. I guess there are positives and negatives to everything that exists. Nonetheless, it amazes me that a search engine such as Google can find a little blog like mine, index it, and begin including it in search results within a day. THAT is impressive when you consider that there are hundreds of millions (if not billions) of web pages.
On the other hand… Microsoft Bing has not found the blog. I’ve attempted to follow the Microsoft instructions for getting my site indexed and, weeks later, my blog is still not in the Bing index. That is not impressive. I have no illusion that my blog contains critical information that just MUST get to the world immediately or anything like that. But, wow, what an interesting comparison between the Microsoft and Google search engines/web crawlers.
Figuring that a phone call to Redmond would not get me indexed by Bing, I decided to put a bit more effort into getting my site indexed. I found a couple of posts that seem to have good info on the Smart Blog Tips websites here and here. This WebDesignZo.com post is also very helpful. I performed the tasks contained in these links and also added Yahoo! while I was at it.
We’ll see what happens….
